EU Design Law Reform

The new European Union Design Regulation (EUDR) arrives in two phases, effective May 1, 2025, and July 1, 2026, with member states having until December 9, 2027 to transpose the provisions of the revised directive into their national laws. Key aspects are noted:

Effective May 1, 2025
Updated terminology: Community Design becomes European Union Design (EUD)
Broader definition of “product” includes physical and non-physical items and encompasses animation
3D Printing Rights creating, downloading, copying and sharing or distributing to others any medium or software which records the design represent infringing uses of a design
Repair clause applies exclusively to must-match parts
Design Notice System
Up to 50 designs per app, not longer limited to a single class


Effective July 1, 2026
Limitation on number of views removed
Fast Track Invalidity
